Express Scripts acts as middlemen among pharmacies providing health care services, employers and health plans who pay for the medications. Most payers don’t see the rates Express Scripts pay to Walgreens, because of this many plan holders and employers wants to gain access to Express Scripts believing that the price of health care cost can be lowered.

Patients under Express Scripts Plans have use Walgreens pharmacies for many years and these patients have developed a personal relationship with Walgreens pharmacist.  But, effective Jan 1, 2012 Walgreens is no longer part of Express Scripts pharmacy provider, including all Walgreens pharmacies nationwide and in the New York City area. Because of this situation patients are force to go elsewhere and change their pharmacist. Walgreens negotiated with Express Scripts to renew its contract without any increase in rates as part of its pharmacy provider network. However, Walgreens and Express Scripts negotiations failed and the contract expired on Dec 31, 2011.

To reduce inconvenience, Walgreens make an effort for a smooth transition and doing all it can to help customers to continue to use Wallgreens.  In fact, the company is offering a special discount on annual membership for its Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens. This January individuals can go in with their promotion for $5, $10 for family membership and save in more than 8,000 branded and generic medicines.  Only customers with specific prescription plans managed by Express Scripts are held. It is better to verify with your local Walgreens pharmacist to make sure if you’re impacted.  Further, check the back of your insurance card if it has Express Scripts name written there. If there is then you’re perhaps affected

Express Scripts specified that excluding Walgreens from its network has no significant effect. To avoid commotion and keeping costs flat, Express Scripts offer significant savings to its clients by promoting a 90 day refills at retail pharmacies.  But this program is conflicting with its own mail order 90 day prescription business. Express Scripts profits have grown two times more compared to any other health care providers.

Tricare is the health and prescription drug program for America’s military service for men and women which happens to be one of the Express Scripts Clients. Walgreens offered Express Scripts a guarantee that walgreen prices would beat the adjusted prescription of all other pharmacies in the Tricare network. They did this to prevent military personnel from being caught in the middle. Despite Walgreens offering to contract separately with Express Scripts for Tricare, still, the said offer was rejected.
